“basic Notion Of Reading”-a Brief Discussion By India Today Book Club

Reading is not one way traffic. It is like Sun which spreads its light or rays allover/ in different directions. Different fictions, non fiction, pleasure, knowledge, relax, emotion, success, identity; these all are the filling of books.

What do we Read..???
Poems, Nursery Rhymes, Novels, Tales, Short- stories, literary texts and passages, Biographies, Newspapers, Magazines, Handbooks, Textbooks, Guidebooks, Recipes, Puzzles, Advertisements, Catalogues, Comic strips, Cartoons, Dictionaries, Directory Books and many more.

Now the second question arise is- why do we Read…???
For information, knowledge, pleasure, wisdom. Don’t you think that books are right thinks to take suggestions that you required for any matter. Question yourself whether you are reading for any specific purpose or for pleasure because at times intention is more important than action.

How do you Read..??? My third question.
There are many ways of reading:
• Rigorous: Reading to extract specific information, reading short texts. It is counted as an accuracy activity.
• Broad: Reading longer extracts for pleasure, knowledge. This is a fluency activity.
• Scrutinizing: Quickly going through a text to find particular section of information.
• Skimming: Running eyes over a text to get the gist of it.

Different readers; hence different ways of reading. Reading purposes constantly vary; we should vary the questions and the activities according to the type of text studied and the purpose in reading it. Reading also involves a variety of skills. But the most important thing is to know about aim of reading a specific or particular material. Maintaining the pleasure of reading is also important, upto the end word.

More and more reading increase the pace of reading. On the other hand, it is always important to stress on qualitative not quantitative reading. Reading requires awareness, phonics, reading fluency, and comprehension skills. Each of these skills is necessary and none are sufficient in their own right. They must be integrated and applied in text through consistent and frequent practice. Learning to read is not a natural process — it requires systematic and well-informed instruction. Reading endorses mental development because it involves concentration whereas listening to the radio or watching the television only requires limited involvement. Reading is considered to be a good quieting power, and an excellent habit to acquire as soon as possible.

Reading takes seclusion and it takes focus.
