0845 Numbers Becoming More Attractive To Callers
Of course, 0845 numbers haven't been without their issues. In many cases, the big providers aren't making any money off 0845s, so they've attempt to recoup these perceived losses by adding 0845 charges to home services and similar packages. In the past, many people have called a 0845 number and then been surprised at the added charge on their bill. So this has been a roadblock for businesses using 0845 numbers. Typically, they want to provide their clients with local or toll-free access. Any added charges make it less likely that people will use 0845 numbers. And since the turn of the century, there has been increased governmental pressure on these large providers to stop adding these charges to 0845 calls. The process has been a slow one but there has been progress. In fact, in 2009, 0845 providers and customers earned their biggest win when BT (British Telecommunications) agreed to stop adding surcharges to calls made by their customers to any 0845 telephone numbers. At the time of the announcement, that accounted for some 14 million customers. With this win in hand, consumer groups have now begun to campaign for toll-free numbers to be a toll-free call from mobiles in the UK. As it stands now, the large providers attach a fee to the call much the way they had done with the 0845 numbers. The mobile providers suggest the fees are in place to cover their costs, but investigations into the matter suggest that these costs are nothing more than fuzzy math.
