1 Like No Other Secret Garden Collection
The unique print for the season inspired by Alexander Marshal’s florilegium visually portrays the Secret Garden theme as it flourishes on every shirt; whether in the cuff, under collar or back neck yoke. Entwined foliage and flowering buds, blooming lilies, ripe berries and butterflies, all coloured with three vibrant palettes: Solar, Lagoon Marshal lived &worked in close conjunction with John Tradescant the Younger during Tradescant’s royal post of Keeper of the Gardens of Oatland Palace, Surrey. Tradescant & his father were amongst the greatest names of English garden history, their residence nicknames ‘The Ark’, housed a unique collection of curiosities that is now part of the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford University. By the mid 17thC, new plants were arriving in England from all over the world via ambassadors of Constantinople, Canada and Virginia. Tradescant would himself take expeditions abroad in search of new plant species, while Marshal would record these once secret wonders in watercolour. 1620 Alexander Marshall’s florilegium His florilegium was compiled over 30 years, and is the only English flower book to survive from this period, depicting flower portraits of exotic newcomers and native plants.
