100 years ago, we had basically the same genetic makeup as today. People seemed to maintain their weight and if they did start to gain they took the necessary steps to return to their natural weight. With all of the existing labor saving devices today, we consume many fewer calories. Previously, the sensitivity of our appetite would have compensated for reduced physical activity and would have effectively controlled our weight gain. For some reason or reasons unknown, our appetite control, also known as our appestat, isn't functioning at its proper sensitivity level. The two major factors controlling your appetite are psychological and physiological. Psychological The utilization of foods to control anxiety has come to be known as comfort foods. Throughout the ages, people have used eating as a way to relieve anxieties and stress. Everyone has had the comfort of being held and pacified while being suckled at their mother’s breast. This is certainly a factor in one's appetite, but has been constant throughout history. This isn't something that's changed over the last 100 years. If these cravings have been the same for the last 100 years, our obesity problem must have more to do with our physiological cravings. Physiological On the other hand there has been a tremendous change in our physical food supply. Because the actual physical foods we consume are similar to what was common 100 years ago we are excluding the types of food as being the root problem as to why we as a nation are continuing to become more overweight. The major difference isn't the foods we eat, but rather the nutritional quality of the foods we eat. We know that the body will sometimes have a craving for different types of food.
