10 Essential Oil Safety Rules

1. Quality essential oils are highly concentrated & potent, it is necessary to use them with care. If you do not understand how to apply the oil and what it does then do not use it.

2. Essential oils must be stored out of children’s reach.

3. Some essential oils are contraindicated (not to be used) when a person has certain medical conditions. This is part of the reason why having a good understanding of the oil you are using is very important.
Essential oils are made up of a blend of chemical compounds that cause different reactions in the body. These blends are often classified into ----------- which help you to understand the result using the oil will have on the body. For example an emmenogoge oil will help to balance the uterus and so could cause complications in early pregnancy and so should not be used topically.

4. Making sure you stick to correct dose guidelines is the next part of understanding the essential oils you use. More is definitely not better in the case of aromatherapy. Remember these oils are potent and concentrated and that they cause chemical reactions in the person’s body. Essential oils work in remarkably small doses to create big results. This is especially the case with child, elderly and animals. Remember less is more!!

Always follow the dose and measure how much you are using. I remember one client I had was having trouble falling asleep so I suggested she put 2-3 drops of lavender oil on her pillow. The next day she rang me and said it didn’t work that all it had done was give her a headache. I asked her how much she had used. “Ah at least 30 drops, I really wanted to get to sleep.” Do you see the why she had a headache! The next night she placed 2 drops on her pillow and slept like a baby.

If you are using essential oils for yourself or on someone else be very careful with the dose and make sure they understand how much to use clearly.

5. Because the oils are concentrated in most cases you will need to dilute them in a carrier oil such as avocado oil or a moisturizer cream. Only use quality carrier oils that are cold pressed and are not rancid.

6. Store your oils in dark bottles away from the sun. If you are buying aromatherapy products they will need to be in dark or at least opaque bottles so that they haven’t been damaged by the sun.

7. Wash your hands before and after using essential oils as concentrated drops can be left on your fingers. I have burnt my face when I have touched it with drops of peppermint left on my fingers not pleasant and best avoided.

8. Write down every essential oil application or blend in a special journal. This will enable you to find blends that worked and remake them and also to know exactly what was in a blend and the dosage of each oil should a blend cause a reaction. Do not rely on remembering as 9 times out of 10 you won’t. This is important for both safety and also to help you in future reference of blends that really worked well.

9. Make sure your oils are in good condition before use. This is especially for citrus oils as their self life is less then most other oils. You will get better at this as you use essential oils, always smell them before use to make sure they are still fresh and not rancid.

10. Do not use essential oils internally without the guidance of a qualified aromatherapist. Remember essential oils are potent and are medicine.
