10 Golden Retriever Breeder Traits To Look For

If you are looking for a purebred golden retriever puppy, it is easy to become overwhelmed with the high number of breeders and kennels that you see advertised online, in newspapers, magazines and other publications. Unfortunately, anyone can create an ad, set up their own website or hang up a “Puppies for Sale” sign, which does not necessarily mean they are reputable golden retriever breeders.

Fundamentally, there are two different kinds of golden retriever breeders. Some breeders are in the business because they love golden retrievers and are interested in the betterment of the breed. Others are in it solely for the money.

Golden retriever breeders that are in it for the love of the breed are the ones you should go to when you decide to buy your new puppy. Breeders with a seemingly unlimited number of puppies are usually running what is referred to as a puppy mill, and breeding puppies just for selling.

Not only are the dogs from these breeders rarely as purebred as they claim to be, but they are usually cruel and abusive toward their dogs. Puppy mill dogs rarely receive necessary veterinarian care, they are usually not fed and exercised properly and the conditions in which they are force to live are not up to par. The puppies that come from puppy mills are rarely of show quality and often have genetic problems.

Here are some things to look for in a reputable, high quality golden retriever breeder:

1. Quality golden retrievers will only breed a few dogs at a time and is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to the breed.

2. The best golden retriever breeders only sell their puppies on a presale basis, before the puppies are born. These breeders have waiting lists, indicating they focus more on the health of the bitch and not the value of the puppies. Most reputable breeders will only breed a single dog once per year and some only once every two years.

3. A breeder who is concerned with the well-being of the puppies that they breed will most likely want to interview you to ensure you will provide a safe and happy home. You will be asked to fill out an application or questionnaire, which may include questions about your home, family, job and any other pets that you may have.

4. The best breeders are known by others in the area, which often means that they are members of a national or local golden retriever breeders’ organization.

5. A good breeder will not only allow you to tour their facilities, they will encourage it.

6. The kennel and surrounding facilities should be clean, spacious and well ventilated to ensure the health and happiness of all the dogs.

7. Good breeders interact well with the dogs on their grounds. The dogs will be happy to see the breeder, not timid and scarce.

8. The best golden retriever breeders will provide you with registration papers and everything you need to register your golden retriever puppy.

9. You should be able to get information from the breeder on the parents’ championship lines, in addition to genetic test results and veterinary certificates.

10. A good golden retriever breeder will provide a guarantee that the dog will be healthy. In addition, you may be required to sign a contract stating that if you no longer want the dog, you will return it to them.

Quality golden retriever breeders are willing to work with new dog owners, offering information and advice on the breed. In addition, most will require you to provide proof of sterilization once you puppy reaches a certain age.
