Start surrounding yourself with more positive, happy and supportive people. By doing this simple task you will generate a large build up of positive feelings. Your self esteem will start to grow, you will come out of your shell more and you will have more respect because you will notice these people will include you in their conversations and be interested in your opinions. 2. Set yourself goals in what you want to achieve. Write them down on a piece of paper and make it clear about what you want. To make it easier, break these goals down in smaller chunks which you’ll find easier to achieve. Don’t start with something too big that you feel is still out of your reach. Keeping them small from the start will make reaching your main goals easier. You will feel an enormous sense of satisfaction as you conquer one of your smaller goals. 3. Never put yourself down or make the mistake of brooding over negative things. Keep reminding yourself about your accomplishments, your qualities and how you help your friends and family. Always be positive about yourself. 4. Try not to get upset or defensive whenever anyone critisies you and try and let these jibes and “put downs” to be like water off a ducks back. This will destroy your weaknesses one by one. It is important that the critisism is constructive. Try not allow yourself to be overwhelmed by critisism that is meant to lower your self confidence and could do irreparable damage to your self confidence. 5. There will be from time to time moments when you need to accept that we will fail. This could get us down and have a negative effect on us. Try not let this happen. We shoulf think we haven’t been successful this time and success will prevail the next time. This will help us pull ourselves together and successfully move on. Having this positive attitude will allow us to overcome these difficult conditions. 6. You will lose self confidence if you always try and compare yourself with others as you will feel inferior. Just try and concentrate on your own personal achievements. Keeping this approach will give you self confidence and make you feel better about yourself at the same time when dealing with your peer group. This can be difficult at times when you are surrounded by people who are having successful careers loving relationships and happy social lives. Be happy for them, but just concentrate on your own happiness. 7. Failures are like parasites. Don’t ever put yourself down in front of others and be open for them to join in the critisism of you. In any group, if someone allows themselves to be open to critisism more and more people join in and enjoy making fun of your failures. If you want people to treat you with respect, keep these thoughts out of your mind. This will only happen when you maintain a positive exterior no matter what the situation is. Make it your goal to erradicate any self critisism. 8. You must learn to stand up to bullies in your personal life and work. Work colleagues can be particularly critical in places of work. They can operate like packs of wolves and be pretty horrible. Sometimes work managers can behave like bullies. You must be assertive about your rights. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you should start any physical battles or scream and shout to make your point. You should exercise restraint and put your point over in a dignified manner. Don’t raise your voice, count to ten, breath deep and talk calmly. This will not only make others treat you with respect but will also improve your self confidence and self esteem. 9. You may make a special effort by avoiding talking to groups of people as you are being self concious. This may not apply to many of you, but when approaching groups of people, introduce yourself to them, ask questions about themselves but not too personal, listen to their answers and try and be genuine and interested in their answers. Listening attentively will make it easy to respond and show that you’re interested. The more you interact with people, the more you feel relaxed. You will start to realize how easy it is to speak to groups of people and by concentrating on what others are saying will make you more relaxed. 10.
