11 Solid Tips For Finding A Great Apartment

1. Location
Great apartment are in great areas. The first step in finding the right apartment is selecting an attractive area. Residences in upscale areas will be more expensive than those in less attractive areas. However, in many cases you will have a better “living experience” residing in a simple apartment in an upscale area than in a deluxe apartment in a less attractive area.

2. Basic decisions
Set a budget for your apartment and stick to it. Then decide on the area (sqm) you require and the type of unit you want – studio, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, three-bedroom or penthouse
3. Make a list
Compile a list of possible residences by consulting a reputable real estate company, searching online or by taking the time to walk around the areas you are considering living in to see what’s there
4. Limit your options
Limit your number of options to between 5 and 15 apartments, depending on how much time you have before you need to move. The more apartment options you review, the better your chance of finding your ideal residence.
5. Call
Call and speak with the staff at various apartments. Are they friendly and professional? Are they knowledgeable? How’s their English? After speaking with them, do you feel this is a professional run apartment complex whose staff will be attentive and service oriented?
6. Visit the property
The next step is to personally visit the property. But don’t only examine the units and facilities. Tour the entire interior of the building. Then, walk around the perimeter of the property. Your observations will be meaningful. Are the building well maintained? Is the property clean? A clean, well-maintained apartment complex will undoubtedly offer a better overall living experience.
7. Meet the staff
While you are at the property, speak with several members of the on-site staff to get a better feel for the place. Ask them as many questions as you can think of. Do they come across as being well-trained, efficient and resourceful? Do they appear to be working hard or hardly working? Remember that they will be the staff who will be working for you if you decide to live there.
8. Maintenance
Ask the residence staff about their maintenance policy. How long does it take for them to complete repairs? Are there any maintenance requests which have been pending for more than one week?
9. Security
Are the security personnel present and active? Try walking in off the street and see if you can get upstairs without anyone stopping you. Is there more than one line of defense? What about cameras and key cards? You might want too also try visiting the property at night. Do the guards actually patrol the property or are they off sleeping in a guard booth?
10. Speak to a residence
Ask to speak to at least one resident at the apartment complex or start up a conversation with someone while you are visiting. An existent resident will probably give you the best available information regarding the living experience at that property.
11. Plan wisely
Planning and organizing your apartment search will help you find a great residence at a great price. Try to begin your search two to four weeks before you have to make a decision. Allowing adequate time increases your chances of getting a great apartment.
