£116 Million Prison Building Contract Awarded

The Scottish Prison Service (SPS) has announced that Carillion Construction Limited will design and build a new prison.

It is the first of four penitentiaries to be constructed in the country and will be known as HMP Low Moss.

Mike Ewart, chief executive of SPS, said: "I am delighted that the construction of the new prison will shortly be underway and that it will, in accordance with Scottish government policy, be run by public sector staff.

"The investment will provide a significant amount of employment during the construction phase and several hundred new jobs across a wide range of skills."

It is expected that the building of HMP Low Moss will cost £116 million and be completed by the end of 2011.

Around 700 prisoners will be placed in the new construction, which will begin construction later this year.

Further developments for other prisons, which could lead to further construction jobs, are expected to be revealed in the next few years.
