12 Days Tour The Best Of Sabah, The Land Below The Wind.
Choose your flight to Kuala Lumpur. From Australia, this will take you up to about 8 hours, from Europe a bit longer and from North America, up to about 16 hours or so. From Kuala Lumpur, take your Malaysia Airlines flight to Kota Kinabalu in what was originally known as North Borneo. Flying in from most places in Australia, you will generally arrive in Kota Kinabalu in the very late evening. Day 2. Take your time getting yourself up in the morning, before taking in the sights of Kota Kinabalu City, which is the capital of Sabah Spend the afternoon at your leisure around the pool or doing a little exploring on your own. Day 3. A full day trip to Kinabalu National Park and Poring Hot Springs. Enjoy the vista of the jungle crossed mountains and valleys as you proceed up to the base of South-East Asia's highest mountain and on to the Springs where you will be able to take a "canopy walk" through the canopy of a rainforest. Day 4. The start of a two day trip across the Crocker Range. Drive overland to Tambunan to visit the Rafflesia Centre (at an altitude of 1200 m). There is a very good chance that you will be able to see the world's largest flower in bloom. Lunch at Keningau, before continuing on to Tenom for the night. Overnight at the Tenom Perkasa Hotel. Day 5. After breakfast, visit the famous Living Crop Museum at Lagud Seberang, with its tropical gardens containing fruit, beverage plants and spices. Return to Tenom, and board Borneo's last remaining commercial train line to Beaufort on the coast via the scenic Padas Gorge. On arrival in Beaufort, you will be driven by road to KK and your hotel. Day 6. Transfer to Sandakan. After checking into your Sepilok Nature Resort and having a quick bite to eat, you will be taken on a tour of the City which was the capital of North Borneo until the Second World War. Sandakan was also the starting point for the Australian Death March to Ranau towards the end of the War in which only 6 men out of a total of 2400 survived. In the evening, you will be taken on a tour along the trails in the adjoining Sepilok Forest, in search of nocturnal animals and listen to the Jungle Orchestra. Day 7. Visit the renown Sepilok Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre, before continuing to Sandakan jetty for a 2 hour boat journey to Sukau Rainforest Lodge, along Sabah's longest river, the Kinabatangan River, with opportunity to view birds and wildlife in virgin mangrove, wetland and rainforest habitats. In the late afternoon, you will be taken on a jungle river tour along a tributary of the Kinabatangan River to see the Proboscis Monkeys readying themselves for the night. If you are lucky, you may even see a herd of elephant, together with a whole range of other animals and birds. Day 8. Early morning transfer to the nearby Ox Bow Lake for an easy jungle trek. In the afternoon, enjoy another boat trip on the Kinabatangan River in search of more wildlife. Overnight again at the Sukau Rainforest Lodge. Day 9. Leave Sukau Rainforest Lodge and drive to Lahad Datu. En route, if time permits, visit Gomantong Caves where birds nests are harvested (the nests are made from the saliva of swifts which inhabit the caves, and are the main ingredient in the famous Chinese delicacy - birds nest soup). Enjoy lunch in a local restaurant in Lahad Datu, before transferring to Borneo Rainforest Lodge in the Danum Conservation Area. The Sultan of Brunei and the King and Queen of Sweden have been recent visitors to Borneo Rainforest Lodge. Day 10. Spend a full day in and around Borneo Rainforest Lodge with local guides who will be able to show you, and explain, everything of interest. Day 11. The morning will be spent at Borneo Rainforest Lodge. After lunch you will be driven to Lahad Datu where you will catch a flight to Kota Kinabalu. You will be met on arrival at the airport and transferred to your hotel. Day 12. Spend your last morning in Borneo at your leisure. We can recommend a trip to one of the nearby Islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman Park - perhaps Manukan or Sapi - to take in some snorkelling on the nearby reefs, or just soaking up the sun. We can organise the trips for you, or you can take one of the many shuttle boats to the islands. Alternatively, you may like to make a trip into the city to find that last minute souvenir. In the afternoon, board a flight to Kuala Lumpur and then on to your final destination (home?). Some destinations may require an extra night in Kota Kinabalu with departure early the following morning - this will be confirmed at time of booking . Arrive back at your destination (for overnight flights from Kuala Lumpur).
