12 Days To A Healthy Holiday: Day #10 – Take A Christmas Stroll

Every year on Cape Cod and the islands different towns hold what they call a Christmas Stroll. Basically it is a little mini-festival where they have carolers roaming the streets, retailers serving fresh mulled cider and craft fairs abound. It is a nice little tradition that was mainly started to bring in some tourists during the off-peak season on the Cape.

I was able to attend a Christmas Stroll on Nantucket a couple of years ago with a few friends of ours and we had a ball. We bundled up and strolled through the cobblestone streets of Nantucket and were left completely in the spirit. We stopped to listen to the carolers who were decked out in their old style New England outfits complete with bonnets and knickers. We sipped some warm cider that was being freshly prepared. We even stopped by the craft fair and picked up a few little odds and ends for stocking stuffers.

It was truly the only way to do your holiday shopping.

Taking time to get yourself into the spirit is a really great way to get yourself to have a healthy holiday. So often we find ourselves running from store to store with the best of intentions trying to get every last thing that all the good little boys and girls on our lists wanted this holiday season. The holiday spirit is easy to lose.

This holiday season, make it a point to get out and about and enjoy the holiday spirit. Bundle up in a big winter coat (usually it's cold by this time of year where I am anyway), lock arms with your favorite person and go for a stroll.

If you're town doesn't do anything like a Christmas Stroll, do a little research and they may have a tree lighting ceremony or a performance of a Christmas Carol. Even if you can't find any organized celebration, bundle up and go for a walk around your block and marvel at the tremendous light displays that all of your creative neighbors have come up with. If that doesn't get you in the holiday spirit we'll have to start calling you Ebeneezer.

Not only does the holiday spirit help you lead a healthier holiday season, but the power of the fresh, brisk air filling your lungs during a time of year when we are all cooped up inside should not be understated either. Provided you are bundled up, spending an hour or so outdoors will clear your lungs and your sinuses.
