12 Days To A Healthy Holiday: Day #11 – Eat Before You Go

Whether you're going to your kids pre-school Christmas party or an after dark adult get together, no holiday party is complete without a huge array of food. The host/hostess wants to make sure that all of their guests are well fed and comfortable so as to maximize the enjoyment of their party. All this food is great for everyone, except those with weight loss goals in mind.

So, how do you limit the disastrous effects of this tasty holiday tradition of eating until you split your pants? It's simple.

EAT BEFORE YOU GO.

If it's a mid-afternoon party, make sure you have a hearty lunch, complete with a lot of good protein which will fill you up and sustain you over the course of the party. You may even want to have a handful of peanuts or a slice of cheese before you leave for the party to load up your protein and keep you full for the whole thing. This way your stomach won't be grumbling for food and keeping you from enjoying the festive holiday tradition.

A dinner party can be a challenge. If you are being invited to someone's home with the assumption that you'll be eating dinner there, it is difficult to avoid the food without looking rude in the process. Here is where strategic eating can come in. Having a healthy snack about an hour before you are schedule to go the party. Nothing that is going to fill you to the brim, but something that will allow you to skip the hors d'ouevers. Then when dinner is served, enjoy a glass of wine and a healthy serving of the meal.

Another challenge in this case is sticking to serving size, but do the best you can do and if you start to feel full, stop eating and you'll have escaped the dinner party unscathed.

Finally, what about an after dark party, like a New Year's Even bash? Likely you'll have already eaten dinner so you'll be able to fill up on a serving of the food that you have prepared and the content of which you know. Again, employ a snack just before leaving for the party to remain full and sustained all the way through midnight. A quick sip of champagne and maybe a chocolate covered strawberry won't derail your weight loss efforts too much.

Be strategic about what and when you eat around holiday parties and you'll be able to avoid stuffing your face and falling off of the weight loss wagon. You'll have both a happy and a healthy holiday without any of the guilt.
