12 Days To A Healthy Holiday: Day #3 – Bottoms Up

With the holidays upon us there are a number of things that could throw you off track from your weight loss goals, not the least of which are the yummy beverages that go along with seasonal fun. Going to a party and sipping hot chocolate or eggnog can really set you back if you're not careful, but drinking either in moderation is just fine.

These drinks that are popular during the holiday season can be devastating to your weight loss goals. Many are packed with calories and worse yet, they taste so good that it is very difficult to have just one, so here are some tips and tricks that will help you avoid adding a Big Macs worth of calories to your holiday evening out.

Having a glass of wine or even a second one will not hurt you, but having four or five could be detrimental to your waistline, so how do you avoid this pitfall?

Alternate your wine with water (or grape juice if you're drinking a red.) No one will look at you cross eyed if you have a glass of water in your hand and it will help keep you focused on your end goal, losing weight during the holidays. If you alternate between wine and water (or grape juice) by the time the night is through you'll have only sipped a couple of glasses of wine and your scale will be happy with you the next morning.

What about a non-alcoholic beverage? Hot cocoa. Hot cocoa is a delicious treat and can actually be fairly low on calories if prepared correctly. In this case you'll want to avoid preparing it with milk, especially whole milk as this is where the calories come from. For weight loss, the best way to prepare your hot cocoa is with water, but that doesn't always taste that good. Try firing up a cup of hot cocoa with 1% or 2% milk, you'll still create a creamy beverage without all the added fat and calories of whole milk.

Finally, eggnog. The alternative again here is moderation. There is really no secret way to avoid the caloric intake of this tasty treat. But if you're looking for some incentive to leave this one in the bottle, try the fact that you would need to do 2,100 jumping jacks in order to work off the calories and fat from just one 8oz. Glass. Is it worth it? You decide.

If you still want to feel festive and are strong enough to leave the eggnog behind, try some apple cider, it's delicious and is not nearly as tough to work off as the eggnog is.

Part of having a healthy holiday is making the right decisions when it comes to food, same as any other time of the year. Make some of these substitutions or eliminate these drinks all together from your diet this holiday season and it'll be bottoms up for you when you hit the scale in January!!
