12 Days To A Healthy Holiday: Day #6 – Snack Smart Stay Healthy
Yes, it might be more enjoyable to buy a big bag of Rold Gold's chocolate covered pretzels and wash it down with a Pumpkin Spice Latte from Dunkin Donuts, but that will have you tipping the scales in no time. With these healthy seasonal treats you can have all of the fun of the season with none of the guilt. #1 Candy Cane: Woah, wouldn't you think that anything with candy in it's name would not be the direction you'd want to take when trying to lose weight? I would too, but take at a look at the nutritional information on the back of the box and you'll be pleasantly surprised. A 6” peppermint treat will only set you back 55 calories with 0g of fat. Not too shabby when you consider how tasty they are. #2 Clementines: In my house, bringing home a box of clementines is always a sure sign that the holidays have arrived, in fact, we just brought our first box home about two weeks ago and the house has smelled like the holidays ever since. What place does fruit have at our house during the holiday season? Front and center. There is always a bowl of these delicious cousins of the orange in the middle of our dining room table to eat at will. Not only does a typical clementine only have 35 calories, it also has 1g of fiber which is great for digestion and they are incredibly easy to eat. #3 Chestnuts: Immortalized in the Nat King Cole classic The Christmas Song, chestnuts roasting on an open fire are synonymous with snacking around the holidays. While not the PERFECT snack, they are certainly better then 90% of the seasonal snacks out there and they will make you feel very festive. One ounce of chestnuts will set you back 57 calories, so take it easy on these, but a tasty treat that is reasonably low in calories is always a good choice when sitting by the fire on a brisk holiday evening. Healthy holiday treats are hard to come by, but if you swear by these three and sneak an extra scallop wrapped in bacon at the snack table, you'll do just fine this holiday season.
