12 Days To A Healthy Holiday: Day #7 – Keep It Moving

Working out might be the last thing you want to do during the holidays. It gets cold outside which makes it tough to stick to your routine, especially if you don't have a gym membership and even then, when you have a gym membership, it's tough to crawl out from under your comfy and warm blanked to slide on your sneakers and get moving.

So, maybe during the holidays you aren't able to get in your traditional workout and you're planning to really crank it up after the 1st of the year, that's acceptable (as long as you stick to that deadline) but don't just let the holiday season pass you by without making a commitment to moving around a little bit and doing activities that will keep your heart rate up.

Avoiding physical activity for a full month or even two can make it increasingly difficult to get started again when you have more time and are less stressed out. So here are a couple of ways around the holidays that you can keep it moving.

1.)After dinner, go for a walk. It doesn't have to be a long walk, maybe just once around the block. It will help your body digest and if you bring along some family members it will be a nice quiet time to bond and enjoy each other around the holidays.

2.)Maybe the hustle and bustle of the mall is something that you love during the holiday season, but you're so good, you've already gotten all of your shopping done, take a page out of the mall walkers book and take a stroll in the mall. You'll enjoy the sounds of the season while working off that extra candy cane.

3.)Help hang the lights on the outside of your house. Usually most families have one person that performs this task and if you're that person great!! If not, volunteer this year. Getting outside in the fresh crisp air at this time of the year is great for your lungs and it will get you moving while doing something spirited

4.)Go caroling: See Day #9. A caroling party is a fun and festive way to get out of the house and get moving during the holidays

5.)IF there is snow, go sledding. Talk about a fun way to squeeze in your workouts. Trudging up the hill is a great workout and zooming down it will make you feel like a kid again

6.)If there is NO snow, go for a brisk hike through the woods. There is something very wintery and festive about walking through the woods as the
day turns to night during the holidays.

7.)Help a neighbor in need rake his/her yard (or shovel their walkway if there is snow). Yard work is great way to get in a little bit of exercise making your heart feel healthy and happy that you did something nice for your neighbor.

8.)Volunteer. The spirit of volunteering is alive and well and this is a great way to get in some movement during the holidays and help someone in need. Whether you're walking your elderly neighbor's dog or volunteering at food shelf, you'll be moving and helping bring the spirit of the holidays to your community.

Put a couple of these into motion this holiday season and you'll make up for the lost workout time and keep yourself focused on your weight loss goals even while remaining festive throughout.
