12 Days To A Healthy Holiday: Day #8 – Skip The Seasonal Treats
This year, candy corn started appearing in the grocery store in AUGUST. Yes, it began showing up in AUGUST. Candy corn is one of my all time pitfalls. I can literally eat an entire bag of it in one sitting and while it is not exactly the worst candy on the market when it comes to weight loss, sitting down and eating an entire bag of it in one sitting will throw even the best metabolism into a tailspin. (Not that I've never done it, trust me, I have.) So, from August to the end of December there are a number of opportunities to get sucked in by the special, limited time only treats that all of your favorite places to go throw at you. Let's start at the little downtown coffee shop, you know Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks. Dunkin Donuts rolled out specialty items for “fall” at the 1st of September. They had pumpkin lattes, pumpkin muffins, apple twists and the list goes on and on. If you're normally stopping at Dunks for a black coffee and you get sucked in to trying all of these other seasonal treats, not only are you going to pick up their bottom line, but your bottom line will start to droop too. Two examples: Apple Crumb Donut: 230 calories and 10g of fat Pumpkin Spice Latte: 230 calories and 6g of fat Stick to the black coffee and skip the donut for just 15 calories Next on our stop, Starbucks, the kings of seasonal treats. Every year they announce new flavors that are some sort of sugary concoction usually involving gingerbread. Two examples: Gingerbread Latte: 240 calories and 0g of fat Pumpkin Spice Crème: 300 calories and 0g of fat Stick to your usual here and save up to 150 calories a day. Let's move on to the grocery store where there are all kinds of treats. I've already documented my obsession with candy corn, but there is another devilish treat that comes out in early November by Rold Gold, yes the pretzel maker introduces milk chocolate coated pretzels. They are DELICIOUS. On initial inspection they are not that damaging to my weight loss goals, but try and just eat one serving my friend, you will NOT be able to do it and if you are able to do it, I want proof. One serving of this chocolate covered goodness = 140 calories and 6g of fat There are plenty of other seasonal treats that will be detrimental to your weight loss goals, but these are just some of my pitfalls. The point being, additional temptations around the holidays are everywhere so skip the ones you buy and limit the ones that are made available to you at a party or a get together and you'll remain on track heading into the 1st of the year.
