It is not just another birthday. Arguably it is the cross over point between childhood and adulthood. It always amazes me how we are suddenly expected to assume the responsibilities of adulthood in just one day. What mysterious change takes place overnight? Suddenly we are torn from our safe haven of being children into the solemn world of adulthood. The rational answer is that there has to be a cut off point for childhood and therefore in the UK this has been set at 18 years of age. Elsewhere in the world, the age of the onset of adulthood varies.

What are the benefits of being 18 years old? Well of course one can vote at this age. I remember feeling quite grown up by the prospect of this. I think this is a time when you really believe that your vote counts and generally you can give very careful consideration to what each party is proposing. Their young minds have not “heard it all before” which gives them a great advantage at choosing their own political bents. The enthusiasm of 18 year olds is quite amazing and their views in the main are not jaded by previous disappointments. We could all learn a lesson or two from the young voters of this country. All too soon, we close down our hopes and dreams in favour of being realistic and pragmatic. Each has its place of course but it is great to still feel the buzz of enthusiasm whether it is in yourself or someone else. It is contagious and generally everyone ends up feeling good.
