2 Big Cards Ahead For Strikeforce
Starting with the August 13th event, the card got a major boost, as the main attraction of it is going to be a one night tournament in the women’s division, in which 4 competitors are going to compete for a chance at the Strikeforce women’s welterweight championship down the line. The one day tournament, where two women will fight twice, is sure to be highly entertaining. The favorite in the tournament may be perhaps Carina Damm, who is said to possibly be the next Gina Carano, with comparisions of their good looks, and success, having not lost in the last three and a half years. Hitomi Akano, who is coming off a loss to Hiroko Yamanaka hopes to come in to the tournament and make some noise, as well as Maiju Kujala, a fairly new competitor who has a 4-1 record, having won her last three fights. Kujala may have an advantage, having won a one night tournament on March 27th. Rounding out the field is Meisha Tate, one of the sexiest women in the world, in my opinion. She is a threat in the world of MMA as well, with a 9-2 record. Her only loss in the last two years was a decision over Sarah Kaufman. The other event on the card is a catchweight fight at 182 pounds between Joe Riggs and Louis Taylor, but this women’s tournament is a can’t miss event. The event on the 21st has a big card feel, and could very easily be better than the UFC’s offering days later. Two championship matches headline the card, the first being a bout between Ronaldo Souza and Tim Kennedy for the middleweight division title, vacated by Jake Shields, who signed with UFC. Souza and Kennedy have identical records at 12-2, with both of their losses being at the starts of their MMA careers. Souza may have the advantage with blackbelts in jiu-jitsu and judo, but this is a fairly even fight. The Light Heavyweight title match is considered the main event of the evening, and should be a classic. Muhammad Lawal defends the title against Rafael Cavalcante. Cavalcante has won five of his last six bouts, and was trained by Anderson Silva, and Minotauro Nogueira. He has an explosive Muay Thai offense, which he will attack with. Lawal will defend the title for the first time since defeating Gegard Mousasi for the belt, and it will be interesting to see how he handles the role of being the champion. Rounding out the card, former WWE star Bobby Lashley puts his 5-0 record on the line taking on Chad Griggs, who is 8-1. The majority of both of these men’s fights have ended in the first round, so look for them to lay wood and heavy hitting early, and often, in this slugfest.
