2 Corinthians 12:10 - The Meaning Of Weakness And Strength

2 Corinthians 12:10 says, "That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong." (NIV)

Does Paul mean that he’s glad to have sicknesses and diseases? That’s what some religious teachings would lead you to believe, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Since Christ died to redeem us from the curse of sin and sickness, then why in the world should be be glad to have sin or sickness in our lives?

The first important thing to note is that Paul is not referring to sin and sickness in 2 Corinthians 12:10 when he talks about “weaknesses, insults, hardships, etc.” He is referring to persecution resulting from believing and preaching the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Let’s compare Paul’s work to running in a race. Weakness is a worst enemy to a runner. Strength is necessary to run fast and far, especially in a competition. However, there are many difficulties or hardships involved in preparing for a competitive race. The body must become acclimated to running long and hard, and that doesn’t happen instantly.

In the same way, Paul had to deal with hardships as he proclaimed and taught God’s Word. He had to persevere and stand up against all odds.

Just like Paul, you will probably come up against hardships as you live to please the Lord. But the key is to not give in to them. Your ultimate destiny is victory, so don’t stop till you get there. Remember 2 Corinthians 12:10, which says “I am strong!”
