2. Pregnancy After Fertility Treatment: There Are Many Issues That Would Push A Couple To Finally
There are many issues that would push a couple to finally decide on undergoing fertility treatment. Assisted conception is given to a woman who cannot produce eggs; to a man who does not have sufficient sperm count; to a woman with damaged fallopian tubes; and other gynecological problems such as fibroids or endometriosis. When a couple’s dream is finally answered by fertility treatments, the normal reaction should be elation and celebration. There are some couples, however, who feel that the pregnancy might not be like normal pregnancies—this is when fear and worry start to creep in and consume the couple (especially the woman). It is natural to feel a bit of these emotions but it’s never healthy to dwell on them. Anxiety will only harm the baby so better relax and enjoy the next nine months. What to Do • Remember that pregnancy which resulted from fertility treatments is as normal as all other pregnancies so expect to experience the same emotions as other expectant mothers. • Have proper pre-natal and antenatal care. Since fertility treatment increases the chances of conceiving twins or multiple babies, it’s best to have your pregnancy well-guarded by your physician. • Eat a well-balanced diet, avoid alcohol and say no to cigarettes. • Take folic acid supplements. • Exercise regularly but don’t engage in risky activities such as running, skiing, or participating in ball games. • Expect to have more antenatal tests as compared to other women. This is because your physician would want to monitor your health as well as your baby’s. Above all, never be ashamed to ask questions regarding your condition. It’s better to allay your fears than to think that you are wasting your doctor’s time—after all, it is her job to answer all of your pregnancy concerns. Pregnancy is not a period of worrying. Instead, think that you have come a long way just to conceive your baby so it’s time to just enjoy each day that comes your way.
