2 Things That Will Kill A Guitarist
Think of great guitar players like: jimi Hendrix, Duan Allman, B.B. king, Eric Clapton, Robert Johnson and the list goes on and on. I wonder, would you oblige to a free one on one lesson from these guys? I hope that the answer to the above was yes, because I would definitely jump at the chance. It’s time to come back to reality though. If your icon is not dead, what are the chances of him or her picking you out of six billion people, slim, right! I think you get the point. My point is that as much as it is good to have icons, it is even better to learn to play just like them (if not better). In my opinion, icons are there to inspire us and not a form of comparison. Many a time, people that are starting give up before they even begin. The major reason for this is that they compare themselves to the great guitarists and think that they can’t play like them. What this does is simply put a barrier before you, thus; hindering you from achieving your dream of playing the string instrument. If for any reason you think that it is impossible to float up from your current playing level, to any level that you want; think again, it is very possible. Unfortunately for most, this is only but a dream; which brings me to the second biggest problem, perfection. Perfection, perfection, what is it about this word that seems to keep people from achieving their dreams? By looking at its definition (which is: the highest degree of proficiency, skill, or excellence), it is not a bad word. So why is it our enemy in this case? Simple, you can’t attain perfection without getting your hands dirty. So the word itself is not bad, it just poses a problem for the average novice (this is true for anything, not just guitar playing). Unfortunately, there is nothing much we can do about it; this perfection syndrome (that is what I like to call it), is inherent in humans. Fortunately there is a solution for the people that really want to play and are serious about doing what it takes. If you make a decision to play the guitar, stick to it no matter what. Don’t wait to become perfect (an IMPOSSIBLE feat by the way; one can only become perfect by failing first). Just get your guitar and start playing; mistakes and failure are VERY good for success; only after we have failed and made all the mistakes that need to be made will we find, or get to the point of ultimate guitarist. Never, ever give up; keep trying over and over AGAIN.
