20 Juice Friendly Produce Items
If you are planning to buy a juicer, a variety of vegetables and fruits can be used in your juicer to maximize your health goals. Below is a list of the top 20 produce items that are 'juicer friendly'. They are listed in descending order, beginning with the one that is the most nutrient packed, but yet lowest in calories. 1. Bell peppers, 2. Parsley. 3. Kale, 4. Broccoli, 5.Spinach, 6. Celery, 7. Brussels Sprouts, 8. Cauliflower, 9. Carrots, 10. Cabbage, 11. Beets, 12. Pineapple 13. Cantaloupe, 14. Watermelon 15. Tomatoes, 16. Apple 17. Strawberries, 18. Pears, 19. Oranges, 20. Grapes I want to point out that Wheatgrass is missing from this list, even though it has a reputation as 'the most nutrient dense' of all juices. Wheatgrass is so unique and potent, it requires several articles all to itself and also requires a different type of juicer. While 'green juice' can be an acquired taste, almost anyone will enjoy beginning a juicing program with a combination of apple, carrot, parsnip, red pepper, and/or citrus fruit. It is best to combine fruit and 'sweet' vegetables (such as apple or carrot) with other 'less sweet' juices to avoid excessive sugar consumption. Strong tasting veggies such as spinach and beets are high in compounds that should be consumed in small quantities. Try diluting these with milder tasting juices such as carrot, celery, or apple. For the most part, you can use your juicer for the ENTIRE vegetable or fruit. However, there are a few that you need to avoid. These contain toxicity of some sort: • Apple seeds (small amounts of cyanide) • Greens from carrots or rhubarb • OUTSIDE skins of oranges and grapefruits (DO juice the white pith: it is GOOD for you!) These are often bitter: • Leaves of celery (but cannot be tasted when mixed with other vegetables) • OUTSIDE skins of kiwi and papaya • All pits such as plum and peach • All seeds such as from lemons, limes, grapes, melons, bell peppers, etc. are FINE! Put your juicer to its best use by using organic produce. If you cannot grow your own, and cannot afford to buy organic, be sure to use some sort of 'vegetable wash' on your produce before juicing it, to remove as much of the wax and pesticides as possible.
