20-something Males Can Spot The Easy Chicks From Their Faces
Researchers at Florida State University reported that good-looking people capture our attention nearly instantaneously and render us temporarily incapable of turning our eyes away from. The paper was titled, appropriately enough "Can't Take My Eyes Off You. Attentional Adhesion to Mates and Rivals." In a series of experiments researchers showed photographs of faces of both men and women in the four quadrants of a large screen. The researchers found that study participants, both men and women, fixated on ultra attractive people within the first half second of seeing them and were very slow to shift their gaze to the other three quadrants of the screen. The researchers were using equipment which could precisely measure the reaction times of the participants. All of this happened very quickly, too quickly to be the consequence of deliberate thought, so the researchers concluded that it was all happening subconsciously. The researchers also said that they were surprised to learn that there was barely any difference between the reactions of the men and women toward the opposite sex in the study when it came to fixating on ultra attractive people. Women paid as much attention to men as men did to women. One other surprise the researchers had was that the men also fixated on other attractive men. They determined from questioning after the visual part of the study that the men saw highly attractive men as rivals and wanted to be able to recognize them. In another study done by researchers at three universities, scientist said that people can use their perceptions about faces to make reasonably informed decisions about the other person's attitude to sexual relationships. The participants in the study, all students in their early 20s, looked at photographs of members of the opposite sex, also all in their 20s, and make a split-second decision about whether that person in the photograph would be open to a short-term sexual relationship. They discovered that the perceptions were correct more than half the time for 72% of the participants based on detailed answers to questionnaires that the people with the faces had provided to the researchers. Of particular interest to the 20 something males was the finding that the women who were the most open to short-term sexual relationships were also seen by the others as the most attractive of the group although no specific definitions were given of what that meant.
