2009 - The Year Symbian Comes Of Age?

In the realm of smartphones, one operating system has infiltrated more phones than any other, selling in the region of 77 million phones in 2008. It is, of course, Symbian, but if anything, things look even brighter for it in 2009. Let's find out why.

Nokia 5800 - Symbian Touch emerges into the light;

The first step in Symbian's power play is undoubtedly the Nokia 5800, as it's this phone that is the first to use the brand new Symbian S60 Touch interface. As an evolution of the OS found in phones like the N95, it carries over that level of power and usability, but the Nokia 5800 adds one more crucial ingredient: touch controls. It may not be Nokia's first touchscreen phone, but the Nokia 5800 is setting the tone for those that follow, with a big, gorgeous touchscreen, and incredible music player, and a 3 megapixel camera all going towards making the Nokia 5800 one of the nicest multimedia phones you can buy.

Nokia N97 - adding QWERTY into the mix;

However, the Finnish manufacturer has never been content to rest on its laurels, and so, the high-end cousin to the 5800 is due to hit the market soon: the stunning Nokia N97. This ups the camera to 5 megapixels, has a bigger screen with 'widgets' on the front page, and throws in two key ingredients that make it worthy to join the Nseries range of phones: a huge 32Gb of integrated memory, and a full QWERTY keyboard. With that combination of the power of Symbian, and the versatility of a full keyboard, the Nokia N97 is sure to one of the big hits of the year.

Sony Ericsson Idou - the most powerful phone on the planet?

However, the Nokia N97 may not be the overall phone of the year, because the Sony Ericsson Idou is out to steal its crown. This features Symbian S60 Touch once again, although this time the design is more reminiscent of the Nokia 5800, as it lacks a keyboard.

That's not going to be an issue, though, because the interface on the Sony Ericsson Idou, a custom design by Sony Ericsson, is one of the nicest, most finger-friendly UIs in a long time. Oh, and of course, there's one hardware feature that the Sony Ericsson Idou outdoes both the Nokias on.
It's the first phone announced for the UK to come with an immense twelve megapixel camera, and as such, it may well be, not just the camera phone of the year, but the best camera phone in the history of mobile phones.
