2011-12 Georgia Tech Basketball Season

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are halfway through the 2011-12 basketball season with new head coach Brian Gregory. This will be a transitional season, as Coach Gregory builds a foundation to turn around a program that was near the bottom of the ACC last year. Gregory came to Tech after eight successful seasons as head coach at Dayton. With a coaching record of 172-94 at Dayton, Gregory led the school to two NCAA Tournaments and three NIT appearances. They won the NIT Tournament in 2010.

Georgia Tech’s record at this point in the season is 8-10, but thus far they have played only four Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) games. Their conference record is 1-3. Some of the scheduling this year was affected by Tech’s lack of a home arena this season. After last season the Alexander Memorial Coliseum, Tech basketball’s longtime home, was torn down to make way for a new facility. Their future home will be McCamish Pavilion, which will be ready for the 2012-13 season. The new arena will seat 8,900 fans. The Yellow Jackets played most of their November and December home games at the Arena at Gwinnett Center, a facility out in Atlanta’s northeastern suburbs. The second half of their season and most of their conference games will be played at Philips Arena in downtown Atlanta. Philips Arena is the home of the Atlanta Hawks, Atlanta’s NBA team.

There are six home games left for Tech, all of which are against ACC rival teams. These remaining games are scheduled to be played at Philips Arena. The Yellow Jackets will play Miami on January 24, Boston College on February 4, and NC State on February 9. Clemson will come to town on February 21, followed by Maryland on February 25, and their final home game will be March 3 against Wake Forest. The ACC Tournament will also be held in Atlanta at Philips Arena. The tournament is scheduled to run March 8-11.

Ticket prices for individual games at Philips Arena range from $25-$45. Fans may purchase tickets online or through the Georgia Tech Ticket Office. Tickets for the ACC Tournament are available through the member institutions. Philips Arena is located next to the CNN Center in downtown Atlanta, at the intersection of Marietta Street and Centennial Olympic Park Drive. Pay parking is available in downtown lots and parking garages. Fans can also use public transportation to get to Philips Arena. The Philips Arena/CNN Center MARTA station is on the East/West line.
