2011 Interior Design Trend: Finding The Way
Taking inspiration from the world around us, and more specifically maps, signs and urban concrete architecture, Finding The Way uses soft pale Grey's as a base colour to relax and harmonise an interior space. Once you have your base colour, you'll need something with a bit more character. So here's where you add your pastel Yellow or Pink on a feature wall. From the idea image above, you can see how well pastel Yellow works with soft a soft muted Grey for a well defined yet stylish room. So you've got your walls painted and now what? Well, the floor is the next thing to deal with. The best thing would be a dark stained natural wood floor (although laminate could work as long as it's dark and of very good quality) possibly with a pastel rug. Carpets are best avoided unless you want to use a carpet to introduce the colour. Soft furnishings are next. The top image shows how a yellow sofa can work with yellow walls, but you need to make sure the colours match. Same with curtains, the colours need to compliment each other. For window dressings, natural dark wooden slate blinds work better than curtains and can add some stunning light effects when half open. For artwork, Urban and street art work well. The Grey of concrete in some street art images compliments the trend, as does urban images involving the famed Yellow cabs from NYC, preferably in a slight abstract style. For electrical items, stick to Black over Silver as it fits better with the colour. It's worth keeping in mind to keep the electrical equipment to a minimum or at least hide them away.
