2011 Kentucky Derby More Open Than Ever Before

With Uncle Mo’s third place finish at the Wood Memorial over the weekend, horse racing handicappers have determined that this year’s Kentucky Derby field can be won by literally any horse. Today we look at what Uncle Mo losing at the Wood Memorial means for the rest of the field.

According to the Associated Press, things are wide open going into the Kentucky Derby, as horse The Factor has jumped from sixth in betting lines all the way to first. The jump in position is a suspect one in our minds, considering The Factor hasn’t run a race in nearly month, and there are several other horses that deserved a better fate.

For instance, after finishing third in a race in March, Dialed In rebounded at the start of April by cruising to the relatively uncontested victory at the Florida Derby. Historically speaking, the winner of the Florida Derby has always fared pretty well at the Kentucky Derby, either winning the race outright or finishing in the money.

Going back to The Factor being named the new number one, while we don’t exactly feel the move was well deserved, the logic sort of makes sense. Essentially, despite not running in nearly a month, The Factor is a horse that has won all of its races thus far. However, the most impressive part of The Factor’s victories, isn’t that it has won, but rather it has led from start to finish in all of the races. The Factor is the odds on favorite to win the Arkansas Derby this coming weekend, and if it accomplishes the feat, many handicappers believe it will consequently become thoroughbred with the best odds to win the Kentucky Derby.

Aside from The Factor’s meteoric rise from sixth to third, the other big news is that two injuries took place to potential Kentucky Derby Contenders. On the one hand Premier Pegasus broke it’s leg on a practice run in the days leading up to the San Anita Derby. Conversely, To Honor And Serve pulled a muscle in its leg on a practice run as well.
