2012 Tricks For Teens
Canvasing Slim Waists – You can accent your slim waist with a wide belt of canvas or burlap. It’s rugged and very smart, especially if you embroider little figures in brightly-colored yarns on the belt, or sew on flowers cut from colored felt. If the Shoe Fits – We agree that nothing looks drabber than last year’s play shoes, even though there is still a lot of wear in them. If they are trimmed with nail heads with bright enamel. And if the platform soles of your play shoes are plain, you can trim them with colored thumbstacks to match colors of your dresses. You’ll find that paint made especially for canvas will turn ordinary old tennis shoes into the sportiest things on the courts, and you can do a neat job with it on any of your canvas play shoes, too. Made to Measure – You’ll have something different in the way of buttons if you cut a wooden ruler into inch-long sections or less, depending on the size buttons you want. Bore two holes in each piece and sew them on your favorite playsuit. It’s also an attractive idea for your favorite sweaters. Spring Cleaning – A lot of us get involved in spring cleaning and it pays to keep our eyes peeled for hidden treasures and redecorating ideas. One of those outgrown summer dresses will make a useful and tidy-looking laundry bag. Sew the bottom together and put the dress on a hanger where it’s handiest for collecting your soiled clothes. Have it spick, span, and starched. If you’re lucky enough to have other outgrown dresses, convert them into tricky aprons. After you’ve hung your freshly laundered curtains and you want to convert them into tiebacks, why not try fastening them with a couple of your favorite school pennants? That lamp shade that’s good but a bit dull will be perky and fresh if you put several rows of plain eyelet ruffles around it and top it off with a ribbon and bow at the top. Glove Glamour – When you get out last winter's gloves, they probably will look as though they could stand a job of renovating. Try sewing brightly-colored rickrack along the outside of your gloves, starting at the tip of the little finger. Add three rows around the cuffs and there you are with gloves as fresh as daisies. Another bright idea is to embroider over the stitching on the backs of the gloves with bright thread or yarn. Use a chain stitch for dressier gloves and a running stitch for sport gloves. April Showers – Take advantage of the showery month of April if you’re giving a party. Write your invitation on paper cut in the shape of open umbrellas. You can word the invitation starting something like this: “It’s going to pour showers and showers of fun at my house…” and all the rest of the information in the same vein. And just for a laugh, you can have a whacky prize by taking a dime-store ring and gluing a new, shiny dime on it for a setting. There you have a dime-‘nd-ring.
