3 Action Steps To Get Motivated And Stay Motivated

You have something important that you wish to accomplish, but just can't seem to get yourself going. What can you do to motivate yourself to take action?

Here are three ways to get motivated and stay motivated:

1. Begin

Your biggest enemy is inertia, which is a resistance to change in your state of rest. This principle is so powerful that it is actually a law...Newton's First Law of Inertia.

Think of a huge boulder sitting on top of a hill. It might be difficult to get it moving down the hill, but once it starts moving, it will need very little to no energy to maintain its momentum.

When you find it hard to get started, dig deep within and find that little energy to push yourself to begin...however small the first step. According to Lao Tzu, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step".

Instead of sitting around waiting for the inspiration and motivation to begin, first begin, and let that first step serve as the match to light your fire. You will realize that motivation oftentimes comes after you take action and not before.

2. Analyze Your Reasons

Okay, now you've summoned the strength to get yourself moving, how do you stay motivated? This is where your reasons enter the picture.

Make a list of the reasons why you want to accomplish your goal. Are they strong enough? Friedrich Nietzsche said, "He who has a why to live can bear almost any how".

Your reasons are what will keep you going when the going gets tough...when you feel like quitting...when others withdraw their support. The dreams highway can be quite lonely and sometimes all you have by your side are your reasons.

To maintain your motivation, read your list of reasons three times a day, especially before bed and first thing in the morning.

3. Focus on Progress, Not Perfection

Perfectionism is another big enemy of motivation. You try, fall short of perfection, and you are ready to quit. Instead of looking at how far you have to go, look at how far you have come.

There is a saying..."Anything worth doing, is worth doing poorly, at least at first". When you fall, just get up and keep moving...like a baby learning how to walk. "Fail your way to success".

When you find yourself lacking in motivation, just follow the three steps and keep in mind what Og Mandino said, "Small attempts, repeated, will complete any undertaking".
