3 Easy Steps To Help Your Kids To Play By Themselves
"Toddlers don't magically play by themselves for extended periods," says Jane Foy, M.D., a pediatrician at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. As parents, there are some things we can do to promote independence and positive alone play for our children. This not only helps us, but it helps them feel confident about their abilities when they play on their own or in social situations. Take the time to be creative and have fun with your girls or with your boys and see what a difference it makes! The first step is to make sure your child feels loved and secure. Make sure he knows when you walk out of the room, you will be back, and will spend time with him when he needs you. A lot of times, kids just need that extra reassurance from an adult that when they need them, they are always there. The second step is to foster imaginative play. Some girls can play in Cinderella dresses, Snow White costumes, other princess costumes, or another type of princess dress for hours. Other boys may transform into a pirate with a simple pirate cape into Batman or Spiderman with a simple superhero cape in a matter of minutes. There are a lot of places to buy fun dress up clothes like those listed above. Make sure you buy them from a store that has high quality fabrics that are machine washable. Little Adventures is a good brand. You can also play games with your child. Most children love to be involved with fun games. Playing games helps them with math and reading skills, learning how to share, letting go of frustration, and just having a fun time with a parent or loved one. Last, is to make one on one time a priority in your home. It doesn't have to be a marathon play date with you and your child, 20 or 30 minutes will do. Remember to do it every day. After a while, you and your child will look forward to that time more than anything else in the day. You could even try finding an adult princess costume to make play extra fun for your little girl or boy. This type of one on one time promotes a sense of well being and joy in your child that can't be filled by anyone but you. Try taking out a few minutes each day with your kids. Make one on one time a priority. Make a play date with your child and play dress up or other games. It will make a big difference in the dynamic of your home.
