Because most orchids are typically found in tropical areas and rainforests of the world, they require ad good combination of watering, humidity, and sunlight. One of the biggest misconceptions and mistakes that new orchid growers make is the belief that since orchids are found in tropical areas they must need plenty of water. This is a big mistake that will cause harm to your orchids. How Much Water The amount of water required for orchids will vary from orchid species to species. Knowing how much water your orchid require will go a long way to having healthy, thriving orchids for years to come. A few things you will want to know. First, the type of soil used can determine watering needs. Bark tends to dry out faster than sphagnum moss. Because the soil looks dry does not mean the orchid needs watering. When to Water When watering the orchid, make sure you thoroughly soak the plant. Take the plant over to a sink and let the water run completely through the pot medium. Then let it almost completely dry between watering. It is better to give your orchids an occasional thorough watering than to water it several times a week. A good rule of thumb to determine if your orchid needs watering is to take your finger or a wooden pencil and poke it in the soil. If the soil is moist, then do not water the plant. If the soil is dry, then the orchid needs watering. Pot Size The size of the pot also determines the watering need. Orchids in smaller pots tend to dry out faster than orchids in larger pots. Use distilled water or rainwater to watering or spraying the flowers. Tap water is usually treated with chlorine and this could prove harmful to your plants.
