3 Keys For Improving Your Design Skills

How can you continue to improve your skills as a web designer? Many believe in regularly following blogs and reading magazines, but there are a lot more alternatives of achieving this goal.

1. Do something new.
Don't´ be scared of trying something new. The best way of learning something new is to do something you are not able to do yet. Chances are high, that there was a point in your life, when you were not able to do the things you for now. We are all constantly learning. Whether it involves a content management system you have never used before or higher expectations from your client side, if you don´t try, you will lose.

2.Don't always take the first solution.
It is without a doubt a rewarding feeling having solved a certain problem. Nevertheless, there are always alternative ways. Is your solution realized correctly? Are there any ways of making your solution more efficient? Instead of finding a tutorial or a script which is ready to be used, just try once in a while to re-invent the wheel. This is no joke, by understanding exactly how everything works, you will be different from others who just glue together anything they find.

3. Start private projects.
If you just finished a project for a client, chanches are good that you did not do something drastically new. And of course your client will will not accept you taking more time than needed to finish a project. There is a solution to this. Start your own projects. Whether it is a Drupal extension or a real innovative design, spending a little time after you got your actual work done with something on your own, even if it is not much, will expand your horizon. This is certainly not a waste of time, since you expand your knowledge, expand your portfolio and in some cases it can very well prepare you for the next problem that you will need to solve.
