3 Myths About The Oil Change You May Believe
The first and perhaps most obvious myth about oil changes is that they are completely unnecessary. Not true at all. As bothersome as they can be sometimes for drivers, you cannot skip out on routine motor oil replacement because it is indeed necessary for your car. No matter where you live, motor oil replacement is necessary because as you drive your car, the motor oil is polluted by water, dust and other debris, which can and will cause corrosion if not replaced on a routine basis. This is particularly true for those who drive in areas with extreme weather or rough terrain. Another myth about oil changes is that you have to get one every 3,000 miles. Again, not true. Over the last 10 years or so, more and more evidence has been disclosed to support the notion that motor oil replacement as frequently as every 3,000 miles is not only bad for the environment, but it simply not necessary for cars that take a longer length of time to pollute the motor oil. To learn more about how often you should have an oil change, you should refer to your owner’s manual or research your vehicle make and model on the internet. The third myth about oil changes is that everyone can change their own. Not true. Unless you are mechanically inclined, which most of us aren’t, I wouldn’t recommend changing your own motor oil for two reasons, which include: mistakes can be costly and improper disposal of the used motor oil can further pollute the environment. In addition, you don’t want to risk using the wrong motor oil because doing so can and will negatively affect your car performance. Whether you believe in myths about car care and maintenance or not, it is always beneficial to learn the truth in an effort to aid you in proper care of your vehicle. This is particularly true for those who don’t know very much about the cars that they drive. Specifically, 3 myths that you can dispel because they are simply not true are: the oil change is completely unnecessary, you have to get one every 3,000 miles and that everyone can change their own.
