3 Reasons Why Rails Developers Hate Launching

There are hundreds of things that all need to come together at the last minute in order to launch a new Ruby on Rails website. Many of these things will turn into problems, which could cause stress, worry, or worse: a failed launch. Sometimes these problems are actually caused by your development team's fear of launching.

1. The final work is always boring

Putting the final touches on a Ruby on Rails site is always the most boring and tedious work for developers. There isn't any cool technology to play with that will impress everyone else on the team. Instead they have to do things that they feel are beneath them like edit the text, change colors, move around an image. An easy way for them to avoid this boring work is to never launch.

2. Launching involves servers

Rails developers have a fear of servers. Maybe it's because the servers are configured using some arcane syntax or maybe the developer is afraid that they don't know anything about the server. Either way, developers will try to put off configuring the servers until the last minute. Unfortunately for you, without a working server you aren't able to launch.

3. If you don't launch, you won't find bugs

Let's face it, if you have been working on a site for the past few months then you will start to become blind to certain parts of it and miss bugs. Even if you are an excellent tester (or hired one), there will be areas of the site that aren't tested very well. Once the site is launched, then you will have more people using the site and they will find more bugs for you. If you don't launch, you'll never find these bugs

The best way to work around these fears of launching is to launch your site early to a staging server. This will give everyone the chance to practice launching and also make sure you processes are setup for the big day.
