3 Resume Mistakes You Want To Avoid Making

If you are writing or updating your resume in your quest to find and get a job, it is a good idea to first keep reading on. Below you will find a list of three resume mistakes you should try (at all costs) to avoid making.

#1 – Lying

You might be surprised how many people fib a little bit on their resume. Now, there is a major difference between saying you managed 1,000 accounts when you really managed 998 compared to saying you managed employees when you were really just a store cashier. Yes, making yourself seem more qualified than you are for the job will catch the hiring manager’s attention, but what type of impression is it going to create when they do a little bit of background checking? Most will contact your former employer and not only hear about your work ethic but your "real" job description. The worst thing that can happen to you in a job search is to be caught in a lie.

#2 - Not Making Yourself Seem as Great as You Really Are

Here is the double edge sword. While you don't want to lie on your resume, don't be afraid to boast your skills either. While you don't want to go overboard and write something along the lines of "I was the best employee in the office," don't be afraid to mention your getting the of employee of the month award five times in two years and so forth. If you have the skills, don’t be afraid to say so.

#3 - Not Proofreading

Sometimes it isn't even about catching spelling or grammar errors. Of course you want to limit these as much as possible on your job resume, but I talking more about ensuring what you do write makes sense. Most often it is best to avoid long paragraphs; most of us use bullet points or something similar on our resume, especially for the job descriptions. You are limited on words; therefore, you try and describe the job or your duties as accurately as possible. Reread and read aloud to ensure it does make sense. If there is any confusion, it is best to reword the part in question.
