3 Simple Yet Powerful Home Remedies For Anxiety Attacks
About 1 in 20 people suffer from anxiety attacks (I use to be one of them), which in severe cases can basically take over your life.
Among others, the symptoms include tightness in throat and chest, shortness of breath, hot flushes followed by waves of anxiety and obsessive worries and unwanted thoughts. There were many times that I personally thought that I was actually having a heart attack and was going to die!
Fortunately, there are many home remedies for anxiety attacks that can minimize the severity of this condition. Below, I have listed 3 great remedies that will help you start to get your life back.
1. Counting Backwards from 100
This is one of my favorite home remedies for anxiety attacks. “The purpose is to focus on something specific such as counting or touching, but not on your anxiety," says Jerilyn Ross, who is the director of the Ross Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders in Washington, D.C., and president of the Anxiety Disorders Association of America.
The reason why this is one of my favorite home remedies for anxiety attacks is that you don’t necessarily have to be counting. You could try to name last years “most valuable payers” of your favorite sport, or all the ingredients of your favorite food recipe. It really doesn’t matter, as long as your mind is focused on something other than the anxiety attack.
2. Smelling your Childhood
Because scent is the strongest link to memory, when you smell things, you are linked immediately and unconsciously to the past. This is why smelling something that reminds you of your childhood (a happy place), such as baby powder, can also be successfully used as one of the home remedies for anxiety attacks.
The great thing about baby powder is that it can be stored in a small container such as a film case, making it portable for when you go out. But keep in mind that it doesn’t necessarily have to be baby powder. You can use anything that reminds you of a happy time in your life. I personally found this to be one of the more powerful home remedies for anxiety attacks.
3. Diet and Exercise
Although it may seem pretty basic, a nutritious diet is one of the most important home remedies for anxiety attacks. You should always try to include all of the food groups in your diet including lean protein foods, while avoiding processed and fatty foods. If you can, avoid all caffeine products.
Including a daily multi-vitamin in your daily diet is also a good idea. Having all the right vitamins and minerals through a good diet will quickly promote a feeling of well being, and help you overcome anxiety.
Exercise is also one of the best home remedies for anxiety attacks. By simply exercising for a mere thirty minutes a day, you will release endorphins, which are natural mood enhancing chemicals (a lot healthier than the chemicals a doctor will give you for anxiety).
