3 Social Media Guidelines - How To Stand Out In The Social Media Crowd

It's important to stand out in social media. In the business world this is especially true. With these three social media guidelines you can be sure to stand out and attract attention. Because after all, nobody will hear you if they don't notice you first.

Imagine walking down a street with lots of people. Everyone is wearing the same thing. All of them have cellphones and are only focused on what is in front of them. All of a sudden you see a lady, dressed all in red, singing at the top of voice. What do you think happens? All eyes turn to her. She now has their attention.

OK, I'm not suggesting you post pictures of yourself in a red dress. However, if you do, make sure to wear some sensible shoes. High heels can be murder on a person's feet!

That was a joke, by the way. But actually, that is the kind of thing you want to do. You do want to be noticed. It makes sense. To get noticed don't say what everyone else is saying. So, without further ado, here are the 3 social media guidelines:

1) Educate People

In Magnetic Sponsoring, a course taught by Mike Dillard, we learn all about how to sell a drill. If you've never seen the videos they are amazing. Just do a search for Magnetic Sponsoring. Amazing stuff, really. What he says is that the easiest way to sell a drill is teaching how to make a hole. For me, this was absolutely mind blowing. It makes perfect sense! Why would someone be looking for a drill? They're not! What they are looking for is a means to make a hole! At some point in time they learned that the easiest way to make a hole is with a drill. The simplest things in life are often the most profound. Wouldn't you agree?

Don't you just love those aha moments? Most people would rather learn than do. Well, what if you don't have anything to teach? Well actually, you have a lot to teach others. But what if you're just not having a good day? What then? How about using a quote? Everyone loves quotes. You always pay attention when something is in quotes. It's in quotations. It has to be important! (Just be sure to give credit when credit is due.)

2) Just Be Yourself

People want to know you. Relationship building is key in creating a solid business. That's why businesses work so hard to brand themselves. When thinking about computers, Dell comes to mind. Dude! You're getting a Dell! When I think of apples I think of Newton. Maybe not the best example. But do you see where I'm going here?

People want to know who you are. They need to see you as a real person. They need to believe that you share something, that you are friends. Interestingly enough you don't have to do much to give that feeling. What matters is that they feel like you are a friend, whether you are or not. When you share experiences, when you are perceived as a real person, an instant bond is created. It's as easy as just being yourself.

3) Create Some Kind Of Interaction

This is the most important part of the three social media guidelines. Most people like to contribute. Whether it's answering questions or sharing pictures. By creating interaction between people you suddenly BECOME the social media. A nexus of activity forms with you at the center.

Perhaps this should be called the 4 social media guidelines because there's one more thing to bear in mind. Are you familiar with the saying, "Out of sight, out of mind"? When you join a social media site always remember to participate. The more you are seen, the more people will trust and identify with you. I have heard it takes a person being exposed to a product 7 times before they will buy it. It even applies to us as individuals.

So, I hope these social media guidelines have helped you. Remember, provide some value, be you and create some kind of interaction. Before long you will be at the center of the party we call social media.
