3 Steps To Greater Data Security

It's no secret that security breaches cost companies money every time they occur, but the real costs of a security breach go beyond mere money. When customers hear that a company they purchase goods and services from suffered a security breach, they immediately feel that the company no longer has the ability to protect their precious confidential information properly. At this point, it's very difficult to convince customers to stay, and lost revenue becomes almost a certainty. Thankfully, it doesn't have to be that way at all. The key to preventing security breaches is to make sure that data security is kept at an all-time high at all times. It goes without saying that this is definitely not something that is easy, or can be implemented overnight.

However, it is possible to take steps towards greater data security without completely changing everything you have in place already. There are essentially three steps that you will want to take in order to achieve greater data security.

One of the biggest things you can do when it comes to building greater data security is to make sure that you take the time to actually review the current user access policies on file. For some organizations, this will mean going over every user that has access to your network and looking at exactly what files they have access to. Many security breaches are caused by users that have unauthorized access to a set of files. There may have been one point in time where the user had the right to access that set of files, but doesn't actually work on that project anymore. This is where you will want to make sure that you disable access so that they can't cause security breaches later on.

Another area that can be exploited to cause security breaches is non-updated or badly written software. You will want to make sure that all the software the company's network relies on day in and day out is updated frequently so that you receive any critical security patches immediately.

Finally, you will want to make sure that you have strong encryption in place across the entire network. This means everything from email to the actual files that your company relies on in order to conduct business. There are numerous encryption products on the market that provide seamless and transparent encryption without requiring users to have to learn new techniques from scratch.

All things considered, there are definitely other security practices that you will want to review, edit, and even implement in a different way than prescribed here -- this is simply a general listing of tips to get you thinking more about security in your business as a whole. You will still want to look at your company's unique security policies and determine what you will need to do based on your company's specific goals, marketplace, and other guidelines that need to be followed based on your particular industry. However, with the information in this guide, you should have no problem getting the greater data security you're looking for.
