3 Surefire Stress Management Skills For Fast Relief From Stress & Anxiety

Stress, anxiety and depression blight the lives of millions of sufferers every year. As well as affecting mental health, these illnesses also affect physical health so let's now look at 3 key stress management skills to help you cope effectively with these problems.

1. Use your power - During episodes of stress, anxiety and depression a sense of helplessness can set in. A belief that things are not going to improve so there's no point in doing anything can arise. When you are confronted with a stressful event, it is vital to keep perspective. For instance, your relationship with your spouse breaks down and a belief that all of your life is in ruins sets in. In doing so, you make one event affect all of your life. Although the event is stressful, it only applies to one area of your life. Relationships with family and friends, your job, and your social life can carry on as normal. Such a sense of perspective will enable you to keep control of the problem and prevent it affecting all areas of your life instead of a sense of helplessness.

2. Stay connected - An overwhelming urge for solitude is a major part of stress, anxiety and especially, depression. Wanting to tackle your own problems, you begin to shut-out the world and gradually withdraw into an increasingly lonely existence. Although the impulse to be alone may be very strong, it is vital to not retreat into isolation as this will merely fuel stress, anxiety and depression. Keep at least one person close to you who you can trust and confide in, someone who understands you and who can be there for you. Even if it's just sharing a quiet night-in watching a movie with them, just having them there is so important. Being able to share a problem with someone will bring in different perspectives and significantly relieve stress and its related illnesses.

3. You deserve it - Another symptom common to stress, anxiety and depression is low self-esteem. Believing that your problems cannot be solved and that you have no control over the events you are confronted with quickly robs you of self-confidence. A great way of combating this is to do nice things each week, things like going out for lunch or dinner, to the theater, to museums, treat yourself to some new clothes the things that are the nicer things in life. An ex-girlfriend of mine came through a really hard time, she was always very smartly dressed and particularly liked going to the theater, fine dining and visiting art galleries. She said: "I don't do nice things to impress others, I do them because I enjoy them and I deserve nice things". That is so powerful! Do nice things because you enjoy them and you're worth them, and it will also be great for your self-esteem.

Raise your levels of self esteem as well as relieving stressful illnesses by giving each of these proven stress busters a try. Best of all, they are skills you'll be able to use for the rest of your life..
