3 Things Every Hiker Should Take With Them

Hiking the back country can be a freeing experience with products from stores like REI and Backcountry.com. There are a few items every hiker should have with them before hitting the trails though, no matter where they plan on hiking. These are items that can keep you safe and help you in the case of an emergency. Here are the three items no hiker should ever leave home without.

1. GPS Unit

Perhaps the most important item you could take is a global positioning unit. These devices are able to help point you toward home in the event you become lost. Many of these devices are even able to transmit signals detailing search and rescue parties to your location. Don't rely entirely on the GPS unit though; make sure you share your hiking route and plans with people back home.

2. Trail Mix and Water

Remember that when you're hiking, you are burning calories quickly. You're also likely to be sweating and losing hydration. It is incredibly important to pack plenty of water to stay hydrated. When packing trail mix, aim for things that are high in fat and calories like peanuts and dried fruits.

3. First Aid Kits

Finally, make sure you pack a kit of items that can help you in the event of an emergency. Alcohol, peroxide, bandages and gauze are must have items. You should also plan on ointment and medical tape.
