3 Things You Can Do Today That May Help Your Marriage
1. Find out what "drives" the current problems. Whenever there are problems between two people there is always the tendency to focus on what's currently happening. In other words, we try to get rid of the symptoms forgetting that there is usually an underlying issue. Discovering this issue will often lead to resolving most, if not all, of the problem. In a situation where your partner is not willing to talk about it, you may want to spend some time thinking about this on your own. Imagine yourself in your partner's shoes. What would cause you to act in a less than desirable manner? 2. "It takes two to tango." In order to help your marriage you will have to take an honest look at yourself. Playing the blame game doesn't help anyone. On the other hand, you can choose to take responsibility. Even if you are not the cause of the problem see how things could take a different course if you acted differently. Doing this can be very liberating. You may realize that there is hope when you could see none before. The best part is you will not be drained down by the negative energy that inevitably comes with conflict. 3. Accept your anger. Many people struggle with guilt. They think that just because they are married they need to always have good feelings about everything that's going on. Actually, that's very unrealistic. Don't forget that the vows say "for better and for worse". This suggests that there will certainly come bad times. You can have a clearer head once you clear up your conscience too. Understand the fact that you have the right to be angry. It's the normal human reaction when things go wrong. As an exercise, do the following: write a list of things about your partner that make you angry. Then reverse it and write down the things you have done to your partner that make you angry with yourself. As soon as you are done, you will find it so much easier to deal with the process. The truth of the matter is you can help your marriage only if you are willing to be active in the process. It's very hard to change other people's behavior. However, we can always affect the relationship we have with another person by starting with ourselves first. At least that way you'll know you have played your part.
