3 Things You Must See On A Sri Lanka Holiday

Sri Lanka is a tropical jewel like no other with perfect beaches, ancient cities, famed cave temples, hilltop plantations and an amazing abundance of natural wildlife. This country has everything covered; from a boutique break in the buzzing cosmopolitan capital Colombo, exploring the desolate Sigiriya rock fortress or relaxing on the beach in one of the south coast’s luxury spa resorts. However you choose to experience Sri Lanka, there are 3 things you just have to see:

Bentota Beaches:

The coastal city of Bentota is situated on the south coast right on the tip of the Galle District and the world famous beaches here are probably the best in the country. The perfect white sands succumb to the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, perfect for swimming and fishing, while the exotic underwater wildlife makes it an amazing diving location. A lot of resorts are buzzing but there are plenty of quiet hideaways and hotels as well. You can even experience the region’s amazing wildlife and geography with a cruise up the Bentota River which in parts runs only 100 metres from the coast.

Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage:

Elephants make up an important part of Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage and are depicted everywhere you go in the country. Adding a visit to the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage is guaranteed to be a rewarding addition to any trip. Originally opened as a sanctuary for four orphaned elephant calves in 1975, the offspring of these still live here and the place is now an important breeding ground for wild elephants. A total of eighty four elephants are permanent residents here making it the largest captive elephant population in the world. The Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage is an important conservational site as well as a fascinating attraction, offering the opportunity to observe these magnificent creatures up close.

Polonnaruwa:

The magnificent architecture of this ancient city that was the island’s capital from the 11th to the 13th century is amazingly preserved. An great number of the intricately built and designed Buddhist relics, statues and buildings remain standing and exploring this magnificent World Heritage site is like stepping back in time. The ancient city is easy to explore and everywhere you wander you’ll discover another piece of history. Archaeological excavations are constantly ongoing so you could even see new discoveries being unearthed!
