3 Things To Keep In Mind When Designing Postcards

Postcards are a fun way to advertise your business. They can be a great way for you to stay in contact with customers in a format that everyone will read. However, there are some things that you should keep in mind when designing postcards. Otherwise, you could end up missing out on valuable customers.

Is it Displayable?

With postcards, looks are very important. You want your postcard to be displayed. The longer it is displayed, the more people will see it, and the bigger impression that it will make on someone reading it. When you are designing your postcard, think of a design that people will want to hang on the refrigerator door. Some tips include:

• Go for bright colors. These will attract more readers than dark and moody cards.

• Go for a simple image. Remember that your reader will only spend a few seconds glancing at your postcard. This means that you must make a good first impression immediately.

• Pretend it is a billboard. Billboards have to accomplish the same thing as a postcard, just on a larger scale. What billboards have you seen that have stuck with you in your memory? What made them special?

If you consider these three items, then you will be able to create a postcard that gets kept. Even if the customer does not call you immediately, if they hang onto your card, there is a good chance that they will call you eventually.

Are you Saying too Much?

Think about the average reader of your postcard. Chances are your postcard arrived with an entire stack of mail. The recipient is coming home from a long day at work or running errands. He or she will pull the stack out of the mailbox, flip through it, and decide what needs to be saved and what can be pitched. If your postcard has too much written text, chances are it will be placed straight into the trash can.

What do you do? Edit. Edit. Then edit some more. Trim all the excess fluff that you do not need. Remember, you are trying to get the customer to call or visit you. You do not need to try to close the sale with your postcard.

Is Your Back Interesting?

Going back to thinking about how the mail is delivered, you will realize that most times postcards are delivered face down. This is because the address information is on the back. Therefore, you should not neglect the back of your postcard when it comes to the design process. Try using some of your design elements on the back, including your logo and contact information. If your postcard is to advertise a sale or discount, make sure that the message is on both sides. This will allow the reader to see what the postcard is about as soon as they pick it up. Make sure that all the fonts used are easily readable and do not go into too much information.

If you design your postcard carefully, then you will have a powerful marketing tool that cannot be ignored.
