3 Things To Know About A Conservation Gap Year

So you’ve decided you want to go on a conservation gap year in Africa or India? Great decision! You’re going to have the time of your life and experience something that many people never get the chance to.

But before you pack your bags and wave your mum and dad goodbye, here are a few things that it is worth knowing about a conservation gap year before you go, to help prepare yourself for the adventure of a lifetime.

1) It is Not a Holiday

People sometimes make the mistake of picturing their conservation gap year as some kind of holiday. This is not the way to think of it because, at the end of the day, you are going to be doing some serious work.

The beauty of a conservation gap year is that you are going to be helping in the efforts to protect and study some of the most endangered animals on the planet. Whether you head to Southern Africa or carry out a programme in India, if you are only joining a programme in order to see another country then you should seriously consider whether you should go in the first place. Of course, experiencing another culture and way of life is a huge attraction, but never forget the main reason you are going, and remember that it is going to be challenging at the same time as enjoyable.

2) You’ll Have to Leave Your Home Comforts Behind

When you go on holiday to another country you can expect to find bars, restaurants, activities and lots of things to keep you busy. However, on a gap year this won’t usually be the case. Instead, you are likely to find yourself in a very remote setting, far away from all the modern comforts that you have gotten used to over the years. For some people this is a major attraction, but if you don’t think you will be able to cope with this then you should think again before booking your place.

3) It Will Be Different from What You Imagined

No matter where you go, and what pictures you have created in your mind about your destination, you should know that your gap year will never be like you imagined it to be. People always create images of things in their minds, especially when they are going somewhere far away and exotic. Don’t let that disappoint you when you first arrive. Even if it is completely different from what you imagined, it will often be even better.

Learn to embrace everything you experience, from the location to the animals to the work that you are doing, and you will get a lot more from your conservation gap year.
