3 Things To Look For When Buying A Grill

Barbecuing is a popular pastime among Americans--from burgers, hotdogs and steaks to fish, chicken and vegetables--and over 75% of U.S. households own at least one grill. Whether you want to start cooking outdoors yourself or you're just looking to upgrade an older model, here are a few things to look for when shopping for a new grill:

1. What Kind of Fuel Does It Use?

If you want a traditional grilling experience and the associated flavors, charcoal and hardwood-fired grills are the way to go (and are usually less expensive). Or, eliminate the hassle of cleaning out powdery coals and pay a little extra for a grill that relies on electricity, natural gas or propane.

2. How Much Space Do You Need?

Consider how many people you’ll be feeding and the size of the foods you might grill. Models with a 24-inch grilling surface or less, like one of the kettle grills available through Home Depot, can feed a small crowd handily, but you'll need a much larger grill if you're going to feed more than eight people or cook a whole pig.

3. What Features Do You Want?

Charcoal and wood grills lack many of the bells and whistles found in pricier products. Useful features to look for include extra burners that let you cook several items at once, smoker boxes, adjustable shelves and racks, and different cooking surfaces. An “Intelligent” grill from Hammacher Schlemmer cooks your food for you.
