3 Ways Experiential Purchases Make You Happier Than Product Purchases
It’s not a surprising outcome. Recent studies have shown that the euphoria from a product purchase lasts 90 days or less, but people who buy an experience rather than material objects are happier, longer. The euphoria from experiential purchases last for a year or more. 3 Reasons Experiences Make You Happier: 1. Share experiences with others. Typically, when you go on vacation, attend a Broadway show or enjoy a shore excursion on a cruise, you’re sharing this experience with at least one other person. This means that not only are you creating memories for you to enjoy, but you’re creating memories for friends or family members too. These are memories and happy times that you will think about and memories that will make you laugh or smile years after it’s over. 2. Makes you feel more alive. Psychologists who have studied this phenomenon say participants in their studies reported feeling more alive—having more of a sense of vitality--when they have paid for an experience rather than making a material object purchase. It makes sense. Even reality show participants competing for a million dollars say it’s not really about winning the money; it’s about the life altering experience the show has given them. 3. Takes away self-conscious feelings. People have a natural tendency to want to keep up with their friends, family members and co-workers. This causes us to want to buy the objects and material things that our peers deem as appropriate. When you compare your experiences with these same peers, there is no comparison. While a pair of shoes you own may be of lower quality than your friend’s shoes, your experiences are your own and there is less of a chance of feeling self-conscious that your experience is inferior to someone else’s experience. The next time you’re considering how to spend some money on you or your family, invest wisely. Buying an experience creates happiness for years to come, while spending your money on material objects only makes you happy for about three months. Would you rather be happy for years to come or only about 90 days? Spend wisely.
