30 Rock Shines At 2009 Golden Globe Awards

30 Rock is an increasingly popular sitcom that airs on NBC. Originally created by actress and comedian Tina Fey, 30 Rock takes place on the set of a fictional live sketch comedy series that airs on NBC. "30 Rock" is a reference to NBC Studios' home, the GE building, at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York. The pilot episode first aired on October 11, 2006. Its third season began on October 30, 2008 and was recently picked up for a fourth season with episodes airing in 2009 and 2010.

30 Rock Background

Fey was working as head writer and performer on NBC's Saturday Night Live in 2002, when she came up with the concept for 30 Rock. She pitched it to NBC and entertainment president Kevin Reilly originally as a sitcom about cable news, but eventually changed it to its current format, reflecting Saturday Night Live's skit format, with Reilly's prompting.
It has proven to be a "cult" hit since, with numerous awards and nominations proffered by the television industry and critics since its first season, but somewhat less well known by audiences at first.

The 2009 Golden Globe Awards

30 Rock put other sitcoms to shame at the 2009 Golden Globes, taking home three pretigious awards. Tina Fey won the award for best lead actress in a comedy series, Alec Baldwin took home the award for best lead actor, and the show itself won best comedy series.

Past Awards and Nominations

Truly the "little series that could," 30 Rock has been racking up nominations and awards since its inception, despite a relatively low profile at first. In its debut season, it brought home the primetime Emmy for outstanding comedy series, with actress Elaine Stritch receiving an Emmy in 2007 for her work in one episode. Fey and Baldwin were nominated for the awards they would win later at the 2008 Emmys. It was also nominated for the category of Outstanding Writing. It ultimately received four Creative Arts Emmy awards.

In its second season, 30 Rock was nominated at the Golden Globes as best television series for a comedy or musical, while Fey brought home the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Comedy or Musical. The series also took home numerous other awards, including one from the Producers Guild of America, the Danny Thomas Producer of the Year Award in Episodic Television.

All in all, 30 Rock garnered 17 Emmy nominations for its second season. It was also the most nominated comedy series during any single Emmy year.

Last but not least, 30 Rock also brought home the Peabody Award in 2008.
