4 Critical Things To Look For When Choosing A Vet For Your Dog
You should use the same care in choosing a vet for your dog as you would use in choosing a pediatrician for your child. To guide you on your way, I’ve created a list of the 4 most critical things you need to look for when choosing a vet for your new furry friend. If you follow these directions you’ll make both your dog’s and your life much easier. 1) Cleanliness and organization When I go to a restaurant one of the ways I gage the quality of the place is by visiting the bathroom. If the bathroom is clean then I feel confident that they take pride in every aspect of their work. In the case of a vet this shows up in the way their office is set up. If the places is messy and disorganized or even worse filthy that is not a good sign. Would you choose to go to a doctor that had a filthy examination room? Go with your instincts on this one, your furry best friend deserves better. 2) References Word of mouth is one of the most reliable of all methods for choosing a veterinarian. Ask your friends and family members who have dogs who their veterinarian is. Ask how they like them, and more importantly ask how their dog likes them. 3) Listen to your dog’s instincts On the first visit to a vet, they should do a general examination of your dog by feeling the dogs body looking for any unusual bulges or swelling. He should check the dog's ears, eyes, and tongue. The key point here is to pay attention to your dog and notice how he’s behaving. Your dog is probably not going to enjoy the procedure (dogs like their owners don’t like being poked and prodded) but he shouldn't be terrified. The vet’s hands should move gently and easily over your dog’s body. 4) Proximity to your home And lastly it’s very important that your new veterinarian be within a reasonable distance from your home. Remember, in an emergency situation, you do not want to have to drive an hour out to get your dog to the vet. So remember choose your vet wisely. Your dog's life depends on it!
