Metabolic Bone Disease is a common illness found in reptiles. It’s caused by a number of factors and as I mentioned before, is one of the health issues that can be avoided. The lack of calcium and phosphorous is the cause behind the disease as well as a deficiency in vitamin D. This occurs when the reptile is not exposed to enough UVB light. This is why setting up the enclosure correctly is so very crucial as failure to do so can cause this debilitating condition. It may also be the result of a poorly balanced diet. Bearded dragons require a diet that is high in calcium. This can be achieved by feeding your beardie calcium rich foods or by dusting their meal with calcium dust. You will know if your dragon has Metabolic Bone Disease if he or she displays the following symptoms: • Soft/broken bones • Paralysis • Weight loss • Spinal deformity • Lack of energy Respiratory infections are also common amongst reptiles, in particular bearded dragons as it is also directly related to their proper maintenance and care. Once again enclosure conditions are the major factor here as many owners do not provide the correct humidity levels. The infection can occur when the humidity is either too high or too low. In the case where it does get a respiratory infection you’ll need to visit a reptile vet. You’ll observe symptoms such as difficulty with breathing and mucus coming from the mouth and nose. Fortunately it is curable, but you’ll need to visit a vet straight away. Now at this point I’m sure you’re very interested in what causes the disease and how to prevent it. I think you’ll find the answer might surprise you. It’s actually a result of antibiotic treatment and to avoid it your beardie should be given a pro biotic supplement after having antibiotics. Bearded dragons can get this disease both externally and on the skin through defecation. It is characterized by yellow coloration of the vent area and can spread throughout the entire body. Another infection which is known to be caused by an incorrect diet, parasites and injury to the mouth area is known as mouth rot. It is characterized by a grey substance which lines the soft tissues of the mouth, bleeding gums and a loss of appetite.
