4 Things You Should Know Before Watering Orchids

Watering orchids, like watering any other plant will pay off nicely if done properly. Although the orchid requires no more care and maintenance than any other plant, special consideration needs to taken to make sure they grow and thrive in your home or office environment.
Here are four factors you need to consider before watering orchids.
1. Orchid media – The type of soil you use plays a vital role in the survival, health and growth of the plant. Depending on the type of media you choose will determine the amount of water your orchids will need. Different orchid media provide different levels of moisture.

Generally, orchid media that have been created with tree barks hold more water than those made from harder, denser material like wooden pellets or even plain charcoal.

2. Orchid species – You might think you can water all orchids the same. This can’t be further from the truth. With over 25,000 different species of orchids and more than 10,000 hybrids, not all orchids are created equally. It is important that you research the type of orchid you are being and understand what the watering needs are specifically to that species.

3. Temperature - Because most orchids are found in tropical regions and rainforest throughout the world, the temperature is critical. Generally, the hotter the location, the more water an orchid requires. Nighttime temperatures of 60-62 degrees F are ideal. Daytime temperatures should be between 70-80 degrees F.

4. Air Movement – Air flow is necessary for healthy orchids. Good air flow keeps fungi and bacteria from growing. Air flow also helps to evaporate standing water which tends to get trapped during water, especially around the root system. Good air flow also helps the leaves to withstand the intense light from the sun preventing the leaves from burning.
Keeping these guidelines in mind will ensure healthy, blooming orchids. With the right amount of care and attention, you will be able to grow beautiful plants giving you and your family enjoyment for many years to come.
